Flying a drone in Slovakia: the regulations guide

Updated · October 2026 · 5 min · Dopravný úrad / Slov-Lex sources

1 · The open category

The European regulation applies in Slovakia, and the authority is the Dopravný úrad (Transport Authority, civil aviation division). Its open category page: under 25 kg, never more than 120 m from the nearest point of the ground — see the European framework.

  • Minimum age: 16. A minor flies under the registration number of a responsible person aged 18 or over.
  • Since 1 January 2024, class C1, C2 and C3 drones must have remote identification (Remote ID) active.

2 · Zones: the official file and the CTRs

The authority publishes a KML file of the geographical zones (updated on 1 October 2026) and refers to an ICAO VFR chart; there is no dedicated official drone app. The Dopravný úrad sets the zones by decision (§ 7a of law 143/1998).

  • Control zones (CTR), around Bratislava, Košice, Žilina, Piešťany and Poprad: without a permit, one may only fly more than 5 km from the airport and at a maximum of 30 m — or in an atypical airspace. The same site’s FAQ says 5.6 km: the sources do not settle it. An operation in a CTR otherwise requires a specific category permit.
  • Breaching a zone decision is an offence (see the penalties).

⚠️ Glydar’s map does not display Slovakia’s regulations: the Dopravný úrad’s official zones file (KML) prevails, to be checked before every flight — see the coverage, country by country.

3 · Registration, exam and insurance

  • Registration, for a drone of 250 g or more or fitted with a personal data sensor (unless a toy): €35, valid for an indefinite period. The operator is a legal entity, a business or a person aged 18 or over.
  • A1/A3 exam, online: 40 questions, 75% pass mark, 3 attempts of 60 minutes; exam fee of €30.
  • Insurance, under article 45 c) of the law: mandatory in A2, in A3 (including a drone over 250 g without a class C label), in specific. Not in A1. The minimum is that of the category of aircraft under 500 kg in Regulation (EC) 785/2004; the page gives no amount in euros.

4 · FPV and night flying

FPV: the authority admits it only with an observer, in subcategory A3.

At night: only with the flashing green light activated on the drone.

5 · Before every flight

  • Check the Dopravný úrad zones file: CTRs, permanent and temporary zones.
  • Operator number on the drone; appropriate certificate; insurance in A2 or A3.
  • FPV: an observer. Night: the flashing green light.
This guide is a plain-language summary — it replaces neither the official texts nor an up-to-date check. When in doubt: the Dopravný úrad.

6 · Penalties: what the law says

The Civil Aviation Act (143/1998 Z. z.) defines offences (§ 53) that the Dopravný úrad sanctions with a fine. Here is what the text provides, with nothing added:

  • Flying in prohibited or restricted airspace, breach of a zone decision: from €100 to €3,500 depending on the provision concerned, lower for negligence than for intent (€2,000 or €100 for a restricted airspace or a UAS zone; €3,500 or €500 for a prohibited airspace).
  • Unregistered drone, or operating a system without registration: up to €3,500.
  • No insurance: up to €1,500. No valid pilot certificate: up to €2,000 and a ban on activity of up to 3 years.
  • If the operator cannot prove who was flying, the fine can go up to €20,000 (§ 53a).
These are ceilings or amounts of the text on the date of checking (October 2026, version in force on 1 January 2026) — the text of the law prevails, not this page.

7 · Your responsibility, and what Glydar does

Glydar informs; it exempts from nothing. This guide draws on official sources but is not an official source, does not guarantee that they are exhaustive or up to date, and does not amount to authorisation to fly.

The remote pilot remains solely responsible for the flight and for compliance, as the terms of use recall. Everything needed to check is within reach: the coverage, country by country, the official map and the texts cited below.

FAQ

Can I fly FPV alone, without an observer?
No: the authority admits it only with an observer, in A3.
Can I fly at night?
Yes, with the flashing green light activated on the drone.
Does Glydar display Slovakia’s zones?
No. Glydar’s map does not display Slovakia’s regulations — see the coverage. To check before flying: the official zones file.
What is the risk in case of an infringement?
Fines of up to €3,500 in the main cases, and up to €20,000 if the operator cannot name the pilot, under the Civil Aviation Act. See the Penalties section.
Is there a specific category? Why does this guide not cover it?
Yes: operations that fall outside the open category come under the specific category. Glydar does not cover it: it is aimed at pilots who mostly fly for recreation, therefore in the open category, and a short, verified guide is better than an approximate guide to a more complex regime. The official guide is the Dopravný úrad’s: the specific category.
Is this guide enough to fly in compliance?
No: it summarises the open category and points to the texts. Responsibility for checking is yours — see the Responsibility section.
