Flying a drone in the Faroe Islands: the regulations guide

Updated · October 2026 · 5 min · Trafikstyrelsen / Retsinformation sources

1 · The open category

In the Faroe Islands, the European regulation and the Faroese order on drones apply: BEK 113 (rules and procedures, transposing regulation 2019/947) and BEK 114 (distance and operating rules) of 31 January 2024, in force since 15 February 2024. The authority is the Trafikstyrelsen; the European certificate is valid. Everyone complies with the Faroese order, whether or not a certificate is required — see the European framework.

  • Height : 120 m at most, in direct line of sight in the open category.
  • Minimum age : 15 in the open and specific categories; 12 for a drone under 250 g with a payload.
  • Digital flight log , kept for 5 years (except recreational flying under 250 g).

2 · Zones: distance rules and Dronusonur

Order BEK 114 sets, article by article:

  • Aerodromes : not within 5 km of a runway of a public aerodrome (§ 9); 2 km from medical heliports (§ 10).
  • Sensitive areas : 150 m from embassies, high-risk businesses, police property and prisons (§ 11); 1,000 m from military areas, 300 m in urban areas (§ 12).
  • Nature : flying over Ramsar sites and sensitive natural areas is prohibited from 15 April to 30 August (§ 13).
  • Grind (pilot whale) hunting and fisheries inspection : not within 150 m (§ 14 and 15).
  • Roads with a limit above 70 km/h : prohibited without the manager’s authorisation (§ 17); power lines: 5 m (§ 18); dwellings: owner’s consent to fly over houses and enclosed gardens (§ 19); rescue operations: 1,000 m (§ 20).
  • Exemptions are granted by the Trafikstyrelsen (§ 31).

The official map is Dronusonur (dronezoner.fo), published by the Trafikstyrelsen; its terms specify that it does not display all zones. It relies on a public ArcGIS service, readable without an account (red zones, blue zones, roads, maximum altitude); the licence of this service is not stated.

⚠️ Glydar’s map does not display the Faroe Islands’ regulations: the Trafikstyrelsen’s official Dronusonur map prevails, to be checked before every flight — see the coverage, country by country.

3 · Registration, exam and insurance

  • Registration: in the Trafikstyrelsen register for an operator resident in the Faroe Islands, from 250 g or with a personal data sensor. The price and duration are not stated in the sources consulted.
  • Insurance: valid third-party liability cover is required (BEK 114, § 4); the Trafikstyrelsen states at least 0.75 million SDR; C0 toys and drones under 250 g are exempt.

4 · FPV and night flying

FPV : no Faroese rule of its own is stated; the European framework applies (observer).

At night : the order requires lights at night, like the European regulation.

5 · Before every flight

  • Check Dronusonur; aerodromes: 5 km; sensitive areas: 150 m.
  • Nature: no flying over Ramsar sites from 15 April to 30 August; grind: 150 m.
  • Operator registered from 250 g; age 15; insurance.
This guide simplifies — it replaces neither the official texts nor an up-to-date check. When in doubt: the Trafikstyrelsen.

6 · Penalties: what the law says

The order provides:

  • BEK 114, § 34 : non-compliance with the main provisions is punishable by a fine (“bøde”), with no amount set.
  • BEK 113, § 8 : non-compliance with several articles of annex 1 may be punished by a fine or by up to 4 months in prison.
No fine amount is stated in the texts consulted. The text of the law prevails, not this page.

7 · Your responsibility, and what Glydar does

Glydar informs; it exempts from nothing. This guide draws on official sources but is not itself an official source, does not guarantee that they are exhaustive or up to date, and does not constitute authorisation to fly.

The remote pilot remains solely responsible for the flight and for compliance, as the terms of use recall. Everything needed to check is within reach: the coverage, country by country, the official map and the texts cited below.

FAQ

Can I fly FPV alone, without an observer?
No Faroese rule of its own is stated: the European framework requires direct line of sight or an observer.
Can I fly near a grind (pilot whale) hunt?
No: the order prohibits operations within 150 m of the areas where grind hunting takes place. See the Zones section.
Does Glydar display the Faroe Islands’ zones?
No. Glydar’s map does not display the Faroe Islands’ regulations — see the coverage. The official Dronusonur map is to be checked before flying.
What is the risk in case of an offence?
A fine, with no amount set, or up to 4 months in prison for certain offences, according to the 2024 orders. See the Penalties section.
Is there a specific category? Why does this guide not cover it?
Yes: operations that fall outside the open category come under the specific category. Glydar does not cover it: it is aimed at pilots who fly mostly for recreation, therefore in the open category, and a short, checked guide is better than an approximate one on a more complex regime. The official guide is the Trafikstyrelsen’s: the specific category.
Is this guide enough to fly legally?
No: it simplifies the open category and refers to the texts. Responsibility for checking is yours — see the Responsibility section.
